Using Hashtags For Your Own Book

Hey folks, so today I wanted to share a video with a very interesting idea.

Check it out below…

But here’s the deal.

Say as an author you have a story or brand that you really want to build on for years to come.

Build Your Community

Have you ever met somebody where both of you loved the same book?

Chances are you got along very well with that person, right?

You had a shared interest in either the characters if we’re talking about a fiction book or in the ideas and thoughts presented when speaking about non-fiction.

Well that spark between people is community and you can provide that spark by creating your own hashtag for your book so that likeminded fans of yours can meet together.

And building a community around you and your brand can change your life forever.

Plant Your Flag

Now if you’re really serious about the building and branding of your book then chances are you already have a website for it which is great and a very smart move for any serious author.

But having a hashtag that you create can also let you get a brand toe hold out in the world of social media.

If you take the time to really and truly build it no one’s going to come and try to take it away from you.

Identity

Finally by creating a hashtag that’s simple and easy for people to remember it allows you to build a simple and easy to understand identity for your brand.

It becomes instantly recognizable to those people that love it and follow you and can arouse curiosity in those that may not know you yet.

By the way it’s going to be hard to come up with that hashtag without having some kind of book published first, right?

Well this training can show you what you need to do to become a published author and start building that brand and hashtag identity.

5 Essential Components to a Book Launch

Get Your Reviews

Reviews are the life blood of the book industry so before you even think about launching your book out in a full on media blitz be sure and get some advanced reviews.

Chances are you already have fans in your life who will give your book a good review – even if it is just your mom.

But there are also friends, people from social clubs, book clubs, etc.

If you have a mailing list or a Facebook page as an author you can always reach out to a few select fans or offer advanced copies to those who are interested.

Get Your Website Ready

Every author should have a website.  You can do one separately for your books but the BIGGEST thing I’m always telling people is to build your platform.

That is always have a way to go out and contact your fans.

My favorite way is to do it via building an email list since it makes it fast and easy to contact them at a moment’s notice and since they signed up for your list they’re probably really happy to hear from you.

 Get More Media Connections

Start building up a list of possible contacts that would be interested in your books.

Here are some possible connections to start your brainstorming…

  • Other authors
  • Podcasts
  • Vloggers
  • Radio Shows
  • TV shows

Get Your Book Presentable

There are 3 non negotiable’s when it comes to making your book something that will take it from okay to greatness.

  • Getting it edited by someone competent.
  • Writing something truly great.
  • Having a great cover.

In fact people definitely do judge a book by its cover so if you’re going to be launching your book be sure and have a great cover ready to go.

Find People To Endorse Your Book

If you happen to know or are fans of any authors you can always get their endorsements for your book from other authors.

Why would an author want to endorse your book?

Well it allows them to reach a whole new group of readers that may not know about them as well plus if you’re successful you can endorse their books into the future as well.

6 Ways to Build a Book Audience Before You Publish

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen authors do over and over again (especially first timers) is they start marketing their book after its been published.

That’s putting the cart before the horse.

In fact you should start building your audience yesterday or today if you can swing it 🙂

And that’s tip #1

Start Early

You can start your own Facebook page for your book or yourself as an author as well if you wish as an easy starting point.

That way you can start off by inviting friends and family first.

Then you can join other Facebook groups full of readers and writers who could be willing and able to read and review your book.

Pinterest is a great site to use as well to see what kind of books your market are really into, what kind of titles they like and everything else you want to know about them.

2.  Quality Not Quantity

There’s a band called Phish that never really had a radio “hit” per se and yet whenever they tour they are usually one of the top 10 highest earning bands in the world.

You see they have a small but rabid fan base that follow them anywhere and pay whatever price to see them.

So remember, the quality of your reader and fan base are going to be much more important in the long term for your success as an author than having the biggest number of followers.

3.  Understand Your Market and Audience

One of the most crucial factors about being an author, especially a non-fiction author is to understand who exactly you’re writing for.

The more granular you can get with this, the better.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself about who your target audience is.

  • Do they tend to be male or female?
  • Age?
  • What shows do they watch?
  • Who else do they follow that’s not necessarily mainstream but well known in your niche?
  • Where do they live?
  • Where do they work?
  • Are they an early riser?
  • Do they have kids?
  • Are they married?
  • What level of education do they have?

Once you know the answer to these questions you can simply find a person who fits that exact description and write everything to them.

4. Build Your Personal Platform

Now you can have a blog if you wish but the biggest thing I’m always telling authors is that the real power lies in having an email list.

That way you can always send out an email to people who are more likely ready and willing to buy your book when you’re ready to launch.

The other part of building your platform is it allows you a way to have contact with your audience more easily and they can follow you wherever you go for interviews, if you give other recommendations, etc.

#5: Create Relationships With Influencers

One of the best ways to promote your book is to have influencers in your niche to help promote you.

The best way to do this is to get on their radar.

Now you should not immediately hit them up for something they can do for you.

Follow them online, like their posts, buy their books and genuinely be their fan and care about them and their success.

Heck if you have an email list you could even let them know that you would like to send an email out to your list promoting their book and see if you could get a little something extra for your readers – so that you can build a better relationship with this influential person and your audience at the same time.

The whole idea is to not come hat in hand asking for help.

Be willing to be their fan, to help them and really truly mean it.

6. Send Out Advance Review Copies

In the world of publishing, reviews are king.

So getting advanced copies out to a few key fans and supporters and getting their great reviews allows for a spring board for your book when you’re doing a full on launch.

Now make no mistake, your book still needs to be good (hopefully great) to anyone that comes across it and is interested in the content.

But people simply tend to not trust books without reviews so getting those advanced reviews is crucial to your success.

5 Pieces of Bad Self Publishing Advice and What To Do Instead

Although book publishing is an old business, the realities of self publishing are still growing and changing at a rapid pace.

But there are still a few pieces of bad advice that are floating out there in the world.

Publish Your First Draft

Whether you’re a fiction or non-fiction writer publishing your first draft is a very bad idea.

Not because you’re a bad writer or anything like that but simply as authors and writers unless we get help from an editor we tend to miss a lot of mistakes because we’re too close and too attached to the work to really notice it.

If you simply cannot afford an editor a simple hack to make your book better is to read it aloud to yourself and it’s even better if you can get somebody else to read it aloud for you.

Build It And They Will Come…

There may have been a point early on as an online publisher where you could expect the algorithm at Amazon and other places to send you free traffic.

But today there are literally millions of books on all kinds of subjects inside the Kindle store.

Chances are if you’re waiting for them to send you traffic you’re going to be waiting for a very, very long time for that day to come.

Instead go out there to your audience, start to interact with them, talk with them and let them know that you have a book that they should read!

Talk About Your Book Too Much

Have you ever been on a date and the person just talks about themselves too much?

Annoying, right?

It’s the same way when you’re just always trying to pitch your book all the time.

Instead of just trying to pitch all the time show your value and tell interesting stories, answer people’s questions show that you’re someone worth following and having in your readers life.

Not Investing Any Money

It doesn’t really matter who you are there simply is no way that you are a writer/editor/graphic designer/marketer/production designer/etc.

Well you can but chances are you won’t be very good at it.

Instead concentrate on finding people who are more capable than you are in those areas that you really need help in.

My highest recommendation is to find a fantastic book cover designer as a good book cover design can make all the difference in the world for your books success.

It’s All About The Money

If you want to create a truly great book then it can’t all be about how many sales you can get with your book.

You have to care about the subject matter on some other level and want it to help people in some way.

Caring will elevate your work and your power as an author.

12 Unusual Productivity Hacks For Self-Publishers

1. Write When You’re Groggy

It may seem counter intuitive but writing when you’re groggy can lead to all kinds of new discoveries and ideas that you may not have had before.

Not sure why this works but if I had to guess it’s because there’s less self judgement of the writing because you’re less aware and just in a “flow” state.

2. Set a Timer.

This is one you’ve probably heard of before.  You can also look up the Pomodoro technique.  But basically you have a short period of time to concentrate on work and then take a break.  Repeat throughout the day.

The one thing I would say is test the times that work well for you.

3. Make writing a choice.

Instead of viewing writing as a “to-do” list kind of thing which can create resentment and resistance make it into a fun and relaxing activity in your mind.

4. Make a specific commitment.

In other words write down what you’re going to do and then follow through with that plan as people who write it down are more likely to follow through with their commitment.

5. Chop up the process – make them small, incremental and achievable

For instance say you plan on writing a 1,000 word blog post.

You may break it up as…

  • Write the headlines
  • Determine the topics you’re going to cover.
  • Have your research compiled and ready to go.

6. Percolation

In other words, let your mind wander as this takes your mind off of having to be constantly productive and can instead explore and find new ideas.

7. Get In The Mood

There’s definitely something to be said for creating some kind of ritual for different times.

Having a writing ritual will help get you into a proper writing mindset.

Another interesting technique is to have a prop or something you wear when you do one activity so that whenever you wear it you are “the writer”.

8. Avoiding Rabbit Holes

It’s so easy to get distracted by little thoughts, ideas and other “rabbit holes”

So turn off all other devices that could distract, put do not disturb signs and you can even use a program that doesn’t allow you to surf the internet.

9. Build A Bridge To Tomorrow

So instead of starting from scratch each and every day this technique advocates picking up from in the middle of the a project so that you can pick up your writing momentum easier.

10. Rescue Your Past Drafts

Starting all over can be a pain so it might be worth it to go look at older drafts of ideas and projects and use them as inspiration or come back to them with fresh eyes.

11. Slow Down

Be more deliberate with your writing and don’t worry about maximum speed but keeping a consistent writing flow.

12. Exercise Your Writing Muscles

Based off of the idea of Kaizen, you build up your writing habit and focus on doable goals to build the habit and small process improvements to accelerate performance.
