1. Write When You’re Groggy
It may seem counter intuitive but writing when you’re groggy can lead to all kinds of new discoveries and ideas that you may not have had before.
Not sure why this works but if I had to guess it’s because there’s less self judgement of the writing because you’re less aware and just in a “flow” state.
2. Set a Timer.
This is one you’ve probably heard of before. You can also look up the Pomodoro technique. But basically you have a short period of time to concentrate on work and then take a break. Repeat throughout the day.
The one thing I would say is test the times that work well for you.
3. Make writing a choice.
Instead of viewing writing as a “to-do” list kind of thing which can create resentment and resistance make it into a fun and relaxing activity in your mind.
4. Make a specific commitment.
In other words write down what you’re going to do and then follow through with that plan as people who write it down are more likely to follow through with their commitment.
5. Chop up the process – make them small, incremental and achievable
For instance say you plan on writing a 1,000 word blog post.
You may break it up as…
- Write the headlines
- Determine the topics you’re going to cover.
- Have your research compiled and ready to go.
6. Percolation
In other words, let your mind wander as this takes your mind off of having to be constantly productive and can instead explore and find new ideas.
7. Get In The Mood
There’s definitely something to be said for creating some kind of ritual for different times.
Having a writing ritual will help get you into a proper writing mindset.
Another interesting technique is to have a prop or something you wear when you do one activity so that whenever you wear it you are “the writer”.
8. Avoiding Rabbit Holes
It’s so easy to get distracted by little thoughts, ideas and other “rabbit holes”
So turn off all other devices that could distract, put do not disturb signs and you can even use a program that doesn’t allow you to surf the internet.
9. Build A Bridge To Tomorrow
So instead of starting from scratch each and every day this technique advocates picking up from in the middle of the a project so that you can pick up your writing momentum easier.
10. Rescue Your Past Drafts
Starting all over can be a pain so it might be worth it to go look at older drafts of ideas and projects and use them as inspiration or come back to them with fresh eyes.
11. Slow Down
Be more deliberate with your writing and don’t worry about maximum speed but keeping a consistent writing flow.
12. Exercise Your Writing Muscles
Based off of the idea of Kaizen, you build up your writing habit and focus on doable goals to build the habit and small process improvements to accelerate performance.
